Update and taking some feedback
The people have spoken and some of the initial text popups were deemed annoying, so I axed them. Still kept them for the locked abilities, but may shorten the texts.
Made the orb collectible, and it unlocks experience gain, which for now you get just by walking. I haven't done the cool collection effect I want yet, but I'm shelving that for later to make more progress on the pause/stats menu instead. I am working on basic functionality at the moment and trying to future-proof it so that I can easily add customizations later down the line. I always loved SoTN's "System" menu, specifically the custom colors, so that will heavily influence my menu options here.
Things I just added:
- orb enables experience and pause/stats menu
- started the pause/stats menu
- exp
- level
- next level
- step counter
- level progression actually works
I added level up mechanics, so just from walking around a bit you'll quickly gain some levels. By the end of the day today I hope to have a little more added to the stats screen (I want to make the sidebar menu actually functional). I'm also going to be ambitious and shoot for getting a proper start menu created and implement a continue system, as I'm tired of restarting.
Oh, and I at least want to get some ambient music in there too, as someone in the comments pointed out it would add to the overall initial impression.
